ALBANIA AND MACEDONIA SIGN AMBO OIL PIPELINE PROTOCOL
Economy.
Macedonian and Albanian government representatives signed a bilateral protocol in Ohrid on monday, in order to determinate the entrance and exit points of the AMBO oil pipeline. The Macedonian Ministry of Economy announced that the village of
Lakajca in Macedonia and the Stebleve village in the Elbasan municipality in Albania would be one of the AMBO oil pipeline points.
Macedonia has determined the Deve Bair locality as an entrance point, while the Bulgarian exit point hasn't been determined yet. The procedure is still in progress in the Bulgaria's Ministerial Council.
Bulgaria had assured Macedonia and Albania at the International AMBO Committee meeting in Tirana on Sep. 26 that all necessary activities
for the final determination of the entrance and exit points between Macedonia and Bulgaria would be concluded in two months.
MD: Some facts,
The Burgas-Vlore pipeline, often known as the AMBO (after the US-registered Albania-Macedonia-Bulgaria Oil corporation) has been under development for more than ten years now. In 2002 a US-funded feasibility
study was completed and in December 2004 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the relevant governments.
The project's strength is that it serves an existing deepwater port, Vlore in Albania, but Vlore is also Albania's main coastal resort and the project has faced fierce opposition there. However the project moved forward and the construction is expected to take three years with an estimated cost of $1.2 billion. The AMBO Pipeline Corporation, based in New York, has been established with exclusive rights to develop the whole project.
