The names, Aleksandar and Marija are the most popular in Macedonia seen in a result of a research done by the bureau for statistics. Aleksandar (Alexander) is not so surprisingly so popular, because of the most famous Macedonian ever, Alexander the Great.

Macedonia has 23.942 people who have the name, Aleksandar and 21.031 with the name Marija.

The top 10 female names are: Marija, Biljana, Elena, Vesna, Snezana, Violeta, Aleksandra, Suzana, Ljubica and Katerina, while the top 10 male names are: Aleksandar, Zoran, Nikola, Goran, Dragan, Dejan, Ilija, Igor, Petar and Ljupco.

Aleksandar and Marija are widely the most popular names in all regions of Macedonia, except the northern region, where Bekim and Fatime are the most popular.

In the research there were also the names which were lost in the recent years, like Kiro, Krstana, Dimko, Ristana, Mome, Svetlanka, Dimco, Blaguna, Rubinco and Spasa.
While names like, Julet, Bleon, Nazar, Blenk, Adelisa, Erjon and Bleona are seen more often lately.

MD:The best way to show your respect of our greatest man in history, by naming your child after him! It's also nice to see that family's stick to Macedonian names instead of introducing English names for example, like in many other European countries.
