MEDIEVAL HOME UNEARTHED AT KALE FORTRESS
Culture.
Archaeological excavations at Kale, an area dominating the centre of Skopje, have given the place a new dimension in the past month and a half. Approximation of citizens to archaeology is being practised there with people walking around among the findings of the Eneolith and mediaeval structures and depending on the day, attending excavation of some impressive findings, such as remains of frescoes, coins, ceramic fragments etc.
Despite initial suggestions that the excavation was to be of a closed type, an open option has been selected and according to the head of excavations, Dragi Mitrevski, everybody has an opportunity to come and see how exploration is made. In such a way, people can get to know what is going on in their area in order to be able to develop a relation to that heritage, look after it, feel it their own. People come daily, takes photos, enquire, make picnics and we can see that all this is really effective, Mitrevski says.
In the past week, Mitrevski and others’ attention was directed to opening a mediaeval home that started to emerge directly under the entrance of the existing Kale Restaurant together with remains of other structures.
“The discovered structure is a genuine attraction, but the current area is small so that it can be felt completely. It can be dominating and attract attention. We suppose structures related to the towers, fortification may appear, and they may be reconstructed and placed in tourist function,” he says.
The findings so far include architectonic elements and movable findings pointing to the existence of a sacral area. There are certain data on a church remains, and other elements that differ from the profane architecture, 13th and 14th century coins. Still, additional evidence is necessary to be able to speak of another sacral structure.
MD: And again something has been found! Such a rich soil..
