UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED
National.
The Macedonian Employment Service reported a total of 347,622 unemployed on June 30th 2009. According to the agency the number of unemployed dropped by 1,441 in comparison to May, which is a sign of improvement on the Macedonian labour market.
The agency then emphasised that 277,443 registered unemployed were actively looking for a job, while the remaining 70,179 registered with the service only to have health insurance.
Also, according to the MES, the continuing problem is the Black Market which employs as much as 150,000 people. These people figure as 'unemployed', though this soon may change as the Government has stepped up their inspections and had implemented harsh fines for firms that don't register their employees with Government institutions.
In the past two months the UJP had shut down over 70 companies who did not pay taxes, paid their employees in cash while they figured on the 'unemployed' list and received EI benefits.
