ANCIENT GEMSTONE WITH ALEXANDER THE GREAT PORTRAIT FOUND

National.

In Tel Dor, Israel a rare stone has been found, bearing a small carved image of Macedonian king Alexander the Great. Archeologists say this is a very important find since it shows the great skill of the artist who made it.

"Despite its miniature dimensions - the stone is less than a centimeter high and its width is less than half a centimeter - the engraver was able to depict the bust of Alexander on the gem without omitting any of the ruler's characteristics" notes Dr. Gilboa, Chair of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Haifa. "The emperor is portrayed as young and forceful, with a strong chin, straight nose and long curly hair held in place by a diadem," he added.

This small gemstone was found by a volunteer who was part of a team from the University of Washington, Seattle. The team was headed by prof. Sarah Stroup. Dr. Jessica Nitschke, a professor at Georgetown University, Washington DC identified the image as a portrait of Alexander the Great.

The stone was found in the south of Tel inside the remains of a building from the Hellenistic period.

Your editing out anything to do with Hellas would make Goebbels blush.

Here is the original article you supposedly source, but leave out everything which contradicts your "reality".

Unprecedented Miniature Carving of Alexander the Great Found

(IsraelNN.com) Excavations in Tel Dor have turned up a rare and unexpected work of Hellenistic art: a precious stone bearing the miniature carved likeness of Alexander the Great.

Archaeologists are calling it an important find, indicating the great skill of the artist.

The Tel Dor dig, under the guidance and direction of Dr. Ayelet Gilboa of Haifa University and Dr. Ilan Sharon of Jerusalem's Hebrew University, has just ended its summer excavation season. For more than 30 years, scientists have been excavating in Tel Dor, identified as the site of the Biblical town of Dor. The town's location, on Israel's Mediterranean Sea coast some 30 kilometers south of Haifa, made it an important international port in ancient times.

"Despite the tiny proportions - the length of the gemstone (gemma) is less than a centimeter and its width less than half a centimeter - the artist was able to carve the image of Alexander of Macedon with all of his features," Dr. Gilboa said. "The king appears as young and energetic, with a sharp chin and straight nose, and with long, curly hair held in a crown."

According to the archaeologists involved in the Tel Dor excavations, the discovery of the miniature Alexander gemstone carving in Israel is fairly surprising. The Land of Israel was not, for the Greek Empire, a central or major holding.

"It has been accepted to assume that first-rate artists - and whoever carved the image of Alexander in this gemstone was certainly one of them - were primarily active under the patronage of the large royal courts in Greece itself or in major capitals," the scientists explained. "It turns out that local elites in secondary centers such as Dor could allow themselves - and knew to appreciate - superior artwork."

Additionally, the new find is important for the study of the historical Alexander the Great. The gemstone was found in the remains of a large public building from the Hellenistic period in the southern area of the tel. Unlike most of the portraits of Alexander in museums throughout the world, with unknown origins, the Tel Dor carving was found and classified within its archaeological context. The face was definitively identified as that of Alexander the Great by Dr. Jessica Nitschke of Georgetown University and Professor Andrew Stewart of UC Berkeley.

Historically, Alexander himself passed through Dor in 332 BCE, during his voyage to Egypt. It appears that the city fell to him without resistance. Since that time until its conquest by the Hasmonean Jewish King Alexander Yannai around 100 BCE, Dor served as a stronghold of non-Jewish Hellenists in the Land of Israel.

Says someone who's fellow countrymen blur out the name MKD at a sporting event.

Anyway, this is a blog, our editors write articles with our own opinion. If it says Greek, we do not agree, since Alexander was a Macedonian. We've edited our article entirely now. The statement of Dr.Gilboa and the picture of the gem has been taken of the original article from University of Haifa.

Have a nice day

"If it says Greek, we do not agree, since Alexander was a Macedonian."

A Macedonian who worshipped the same Olympian Gods as the rest of the Hellenes. A Macedonian who's ancestors claimed decendancy from Argos. A Macedonian with a name with purely Hellenic etymology (same for his father). A Macedonian who could participate in the Olympic Games, like all Hellenes. A Macedonian who slept with the Iliad under his pillow. A Macedonian who dedicated the spoils of the battle of Issus to the temple at Delphi. A Macedonian who spread Hellenic language and culture as far as India.

The whole world knows the truth and truth cannot be changed because you "disagree".

Im not going into discussion with you, I just want to point out that "the whole world" which you speak of, know that Alexander the Great was a Macedonian, the same "whole world" know that Macedonians and Greeks are not the same, and yet again the same "whole world" also know that we are Macedonians, with Macedonian history.

Also, the "whole world" seems not to have any problem with those points i described above. Only you Greeks have a problem with it. That says a bit about you right?

The overwhelming majority of the World's historians, scientists, classicists, archaeologists can attest to the Hellenic character of the ancient Macedonians.

Every artifact, inscription, text found in ancient Macedonian cities is in Hellenic. A language foreign and unintellible to the Slavic language you speak.

The "whole world" recognizes you from a political point of view and that's all, since they have no interest in the matter, but it is of no surprise to anyone that Hellas will never recognize you as "Macedonian" since the Macedonians were Hellenes and not Slavs and Bulgaria refuses to recognize your language and ethnicity as anything other than Bulgarian. Serbia will never recognize your church as autonomous either.

So you can keep harping about world recognition etc etc, but in the end it doesn't matter if the Martians recognizes you as "Macedonians".

None of your neighbors recognize you as such, and at the end of the day, this is all that matters.

Renaming airports, roads, and stadiums with Hellenic names and Hellenic historical figures simply shows how desperate you have become, just as desperate as editing news articles 180 degrees.

Who knows? The way things are going, maybe the Libyans will start claiming they are Spartans and the Turks will start claiming they are Ionians.

"If it says Greek, we do not agree, since Alexander was a Macedonian."

How is Macedonian different than Greek? Could you explain this to me? It's like saying that Thessalian,Spartan,Athenian,Epirote is not Greek. There never was a Greek state as such in ancient Greece. There were city-states and kingdoms whose people belonged in what is called Hellenism i.e. had a Greek identity. All archeological sources and I mean ALL of them point to the fact that ancient Macedonians were Greeks, since they spoke and wrote Greek they had Greek names, they worshipped the Greek gods of Olympus an undeniably Greek mountain which evidently belonged to the ancient kingdom of Macedonia ,were eligible to participate in the Olympic Games which only Greeks had the right to compete in and most importandly Alexander the 3rd (Great)himself self-identified as the king of Hellenes (Greeks). Is there a bigger proof than that? Please if there is someone on this blog having evidence pointing to tha contrary provide them so that we can discuss.I'm not touching the name of your country and what it should or should not be but some clarity on the ancient Macedonian identity is in order so that your readers and you obviously can finally look aside of what you are taught at your country's schools and allign with what is common sense and scientific approach to history.

No one had a 'greek' identity until the 1830's. It is impossible to put these modern inhabitants of athens with the ancients, as it is evident that modern day athens comprises of a vast number of different races ethnicities eg. albanians, vlachs, jews, macedonians, the list goes on. The first president of athens was albanian, this is fact.

The problem with the athenian claim on history is that there is a 2000 year gap in it.

Nice nationalistic way of conducting a dialogue. I gave you HISTORICAL FACTS proving that ancient Macedonians were Greeks and asked of you to prove me wrong. Your answer: Greeks are not Greeks,Thessalians are not Greeks and Macedonia is not Greek. Well said!

Historical facts also tell us that there was no 'greek' nation before the 1830's. Facts also tell us that athens was nothing more than an albanian village at this time. Facts also tell us that the first 'greek' leader was an albanian.

Note to 'greeks': try to decipher your modern history before trying to make any connection with the ancients.

Regards,
Your Macedonian friend
