FROM BIOMASS TO ENERGY

National.

Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Nexhati Jakupi promoted Thursday project "From Biomass to Energy" in Kocani-based paper factory.

According to Minister Jakupi, the project aims at replacing the use of crude oil for technical steam in the factory's production process with biomass from the Kocani fields.

"The project provides the opportunity for future technology transfer in amount of about Euro 8 million for replacement of the energy boiler, who would operate through use of agriculture waste", said Jakupi.

Owner of "Hartija" factory Aleksandar Markovic said the project would solve an ecological problem, as well as obtain cheaper energy.

"Agriculture waste in the Kocani fields is burnt, whereas this process will turn it into electricity and heating", added Markovic.

Coordinator of the joint office of the Macedonian and Italian environment ministries, Christian Melit also emphasized the importance of ecological projects.

"Realization of such projects enables access of foreign investments and sustainable development in the environment sector, as well as transfer of technologies that cannot be brought to the country due to the high prices", added Melit.

Project "From Biomass to Energy" will be launched in 2010, whereas the first energy quantities are expected in 2011.
