Culture.
The 49th edition of Balkan Festival of Folk Songs and Dances, including ensembles from the Balkans, but also from the entire world, will be held in Ohrid on July 6-11.
The festival opens Tuesday with an all-evening concert of national ensemble of folk dances and songs "Tanec" from Skopje.
The program also includes performances by ensembles and cultural-artistic clubs from Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Czech Republic, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Australia.
The festival was established in 1962, originally titled Ohrid Festival of Amateur Folk Songs and Folk Bands. In 1967, the festival was restructured and has since hosted vocal and instrumental bands and solo singers presenting their authentic folk creations and traditional culture through horas, songs, rites, traditional clothes, local costumes, traditional musical instruments, and handicrafts.
The Balkan Festival of Folk Songs and Dances is a member of two UNESCO organizations - the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF), and the International Organization for Folklore Art (IOFA).
