MACEDONIAN LANGUAGE FIFTH ON LIST OF EUROPEAN LANGUAGES SPOKEN IN AUSTRALIA

A total of 67,883 Australian citizens speak the Macedonian language besides the official English, reads 2006 census data of the Australian Statistical Office, MIA reports.
According to the data, the Macedonian languages is fifth on the list of European languages spoken in Australia.
Italian leads the way, spoken by 316,894 people, then Greek - 252,216, Spanish - 97,996 and German - 75,625.
The Macedonian language is followed by Croatian with 63,611 speakers, Turkish - 53,863, Polish - 53,383, Serbian - 52,538 and French - 43,206.
Moreover, census data includes 83,983 people who declared their Macedonian descent, putting Macedonians ninth on the list of ethnic communities in Australia
MD: There is probably a much bigger number of Macedonians in Australia than the outcome of this census.

My guess is that you could add at least another 60,000 that hide the fact they know how to speak it?

I believe many Macedonians in Oz fail to understand the importance of data collection.
We had to select "other nationality" and write in Macedonian unlike the other more popular languages. So in actual fact many elderly or even the young may not have bothered with this.
