16 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE

National.

16 years after the decision to live in an independent state Macedonia has not lived up to the romantic expectations from the 1990s – to live better, the Macedonian Kanal 5 television channel comments.

The dramatic moments of impoverishment, the problems with the neighbors, and ethnic conflict caused about 100,000 young Macedonians to flee the country. The acting persons from the historical events analyze today the 16 years of Macedonian independence from three aspects – formation of parties and political conflicts, economic stagnation, institutions’ non-functioning, the media says.

The problem with the country’s name, recognition of the church, rights of Macedonians’ in neighboring countries will accompany Macedonia in the future also, including the vigilance required in a time when the Kosovo issue is being solved, as well as the expectations to receive an invitation for NATO membership and date for negotiations with the EU, the television channel adds.

Meanwhile, the hope among citizens that economy will mark a progress has been woken up. The optimism has come back due to PM Nikola Gruevski’s pledges for higher living standard – everyone is waiting to sense it, Kanal 5 comments.

MD: Anyway, as we weren't posting yesterday, happy independence day! :)
