KARAMANLIS HINTS GREEK VETO

Regional.

Greece will veto Macedonia's membership to the NATO and European Union unless Skopje agrees to compromise on constitutional name, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said.

Karamanlis issued the statement during a TV debate ahead of Greece's parliamentary elections slated for September 16, Belgrade's news agency Beta said.

"Skopje cannot become a member of any organization - NATO or EU - unless it agrees on mutually acceptable name," Karamanlis said.

Greek PM said Athens will use "its right to defend its foreign policy" and any Greek government will do this.

"We want to build good neighborly relations, we want to solve this issue, but the other side should be well aware that it has to make a few steps to ensure a settlement.

MD: The other side to take a few steps?! This side has taken quite a few steps, even more then should've been taken.
