''MACEDONIAN DREAM'' WINS AWARD IN GERMANY
Culture.
Documentary film “Macedonian Dream: The Girl and Her Accordion” of director Biljana Garvanlieva has been nominated for the biggest German award for short 30-minute films. The award will be presented by the German Minister of State for Culture Bernd Neumann on November 13.
The film selection committee wrote about Garvanlieva’s film, “It won’t leave you indifferent. The story is told from a very personal point of view, but at the same time represents a mirror of thousands of Balkan biographies. It is incredible how much passion is felt when she tells the story, but allows for the story to be told by itself”.
The film has been shown at international festivals in Berlin, Zagreb, Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Dortmund, Israel etc, and has received two renowned awards – “ZagrebDox” special award and “Axel Springer” Academy award in Germany. Moreover, it won the special jury award at the Macedonian “Aster Fest”.
The film focuses on everyday problems of all societies in transition – the situation and hope of a talented youth in a poor environment. Emilija, a relative of director Garvanlieva, is a 17-year-old girl, who wants to become a professional accordion player, but she needs a new instrument, which is unattainable for her family. Her mother opens an illegal stand in the yard in order to pay her schooling. Still, she practices on the old accordion throughout the year…
Director Biljana Garvanlieva lives and works in Berlin. “Macedonian Dream” is the first film, while her plans include a long documentary and a feature.
MD: Bravo to Biljana Garvanlieva!.
