NEW ROUND OF NAME TALKS

National.

The UN Secretary-General's special envoy in the dispute between Greece and Macedonia over the name issue, Matthew Nimetz, on Friday met Greece's negotiator for the issue Adamantios Vassilakis at the latter's hotel in Manhattan.

No statements were made afterwards. The meeting took place in the afternoon and Nimetz is due to return to the hotel to continue the talks with the Greek diplomat.

A meeting is to take place later on Friday between Nimetz and Macedonian negotiator Nikola Dimitrov, though no precise time has been announced.

It is the outcome of the talks that will determine whether a joined meeting is going to take place on Saturday.

NATO Secretary General Jaap De Hoop Scheffer is meeting Friday with US President George W. Bush to discuss NATO enlargement and Macedonia's bid to earn NATO membership.

The head of NATO is due on Monday in Athens to hold talks with Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis.

At the same time, US Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns offered Washington's full backing to Matthew Nimetz's drive, hoping that both sides would accept his proposals.

MD: Macedonia has anounced they will not move a step in the issue and Greece has stated that there will be a veto if there is no solution. Will it be settled soon?

No negotiation is succesful with no step back. Then its not a negotiation. Difficult to persuade the world community. Balkans are different now and the stabilization issue of the area is not strong reason as it used to be at the beggining of this conflict. NATO and EU expect a more constructive attitude towards and old and stable ally.
