USA: GREECE STILL DOES NOT RECOGNIZE MACEDONIAN MINORITY

Regional.

Greece continues to deny the existence of Macedonian minority on its territory and to pressurize that members of Greek society. This is stated in the Report of the US State Department on human right practices in 190 countries across the world in 2007, publicized late Tuesday.

The report for Greece states existence of citizens that identify themselves as Macedonians, Turks, Pomaks (Slavic speaking Muslims), Vlachs, Roma, Arvanites (Orthodox Christians who speak a dialect of Albanian). Many individuals who defined themselves as members of a "minority" found it difficult to express their identity freely and maintain their culture, State Department says.

The report states that persons that identify themselves as ethnic Macedonians are victims to the application of the law, which allows taking away citizenship from "persons who commit acts contrary to the interests of the country for the benefit of a foreign state".

"The governments enforces the law in virtually all cases against persons who identified themselves as ethnic Macedonians, whereas the number of such cases has never been revealed, is said in the report. The government did not recognize the Slavic dialect spoken by persons in the northwestern area of the country as Macedonian, or as a language distinct from Bulgarian. Most speakers of the dialect referred to themselves as "natives," while a small number of Slavic speakers insisted on using the term "Macedonian," a designation that generated strong opposition from the ethnic Greek population," the report states.

This population claims that Greek authorities for many years pursued a policy designed to discourage use of their language.

Government officials and the courts denied their requests to identify themselves using the term "Macedonian," because approximately '2.2 million ethnic (and linguistically) Greek citizens already use the term to identify themselves'.

Makfax was wrong, the report DID NOT SAY: "This population claims that Greek authorities for many years pursued a policy designed to discourage use of their language."

The report DOES SAY: "A SMALL NUMBER of Slavic speakers insisted on using the term "Macedonian," a designation that generated strong opposition from the ethnic Greek population. These Slavic speakers claimed that the government pursued a policy designed to discourage use of their language."

"There is no doubt, Macedonians are Greek."
(Robin Lane Fox "Historian-Author" In Interview with newspaper TO BHMA)

"Macedonia belongs to Greece" (Mike Rann Premier of South Australia)
Athens 05/07/07
Macedonia belongs to Greece, like the Acropolis does, Mike Rann, the Premier of South Australia, said today in Athens. In the course of his visit to Greece, he met with the Minister of Macedonia & Thrace, Georgios Kalantzis, and the regional prefect Panayiotis Psomiadis. According to Greek newspaper Eleftherotypia, Rann said that no nation should steel the history and insignia belonging to another nation.

The truth about Macedonia

Experience has taught us that it is very difficult to communicate with people who have lived under, and have been trained by, the Communist mentality. Case in point: the misleading and well-camouflaged claims made by the honorable foreign minister of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Antonio Milososki, to The Washington Times in the article "Name game blame" (Embassy Row, July 11) that his country will promote stronger trade relations with the United States, and, with its transition to an independent nation, should be designated Macedonia, not FYROM.

Mr. Milososki claimed that his country has "gone from a security consumer to a security provider," which is hardly accurate and honest. What the minister forgot to mention is the teachings in FYROM's schools and military academy that continue to poison the new generations with falsehoods, planting the seeds of hatred to come in the years ahead and in clear violation of the U.N.-brokered "Intermediate Agreement" signed by his country and Greece. FYROM today is more a picture of a terrorist training camp rather than a "security provider."

"Our name is the cornerstone of our identity," said Mr. Milososki. What he left out was when and how it received that name. Did the name belong to somebody else for millennia before Josip Broz, or "Tito," and Josef Stalin in 1944 re-baptized "Vardarska Banovina" into "Macedonia," usurping the name Macedonia from the northern province of Greece with the ultimate goal of annexing Macedonia away from Greece and gaining access to the Aegean?

Unfortunately for the minister, history recorded that President Truman provided the arms, and the Greeks provided the rivers of blood to stop Tito's and Stalin's plans, rescued the Macedonia province and the rest of Greece from the Communists' deadly embrace, and kept Greece and her Macedonia province on the western side of the Iron Curtain. What the province lost in battle then, it now expects to be given on a silver platter.

Mr. Milososki, your people once claimed that there were about 750,000 of them in the United States. The 2000 census revealed the truth as being not even 40,000. You now claim that 120 countries have recognized you by your self-declared identity. Would you kindly produce such a list for the public and identify exactly which countries have recognized you so officially by government-to-government official letter and which others are only by coerced bilateral agreements between companies in your country and other countries?

We hope you enjoyed your visit to the United States of America, Mr. Milososki. The truth can neither be killed nor ignored. The name "Macedonia" is an indisputable part of Greece's historic and cultural legacy, and the Hellenic world will never give up its ownership.

So why have only 10,000 protested in Solun out of 10 mil greeks and 35,000 macos in skopje protested out of 2 mil.

because you guys are a bunch of hazbeen macedonian grkomani.

so give it up.

Macedonia/Macedonian is a geographical term. The people who live in the territory of FYROM are slavs, as the former presindent GLIGOROF said. if you serch in the area for signs in the ancient ruins you will find only greek signs. Is this symptosis?

Is there anybody reading these "comments"? I Think "fyro"m everywhere should be replaced with 'Macedonia', because there bis no such country called "fyrom"

Yes, from reading the comments, I realized that FYROM is not a good name either. ** TYROM ** is what it should be called. In Greek, TYRI is cheese, and that definitely suits you as a "nation" as your primary occupation is farming. So, there you go, TYR-OM . And if you insist on Macedonia, we insist on Monkey-donia, as the habbitants remind me monkeys anyway.
Say bye, Bye to NATO and EU for ever you little slavies....

The reason that this absurd "claim" by the Bulgarian half of FYROM has not succeeded in hi-jacking the ancient Greek name of Macedonia is that despite all the cynical and hypocritical "Realpolitik" games going on in the region, there are real world issues and historical facts that cannot be avoided. These may well now factor more in the new US administrations 'lower priority'.

It is also why the UN and EU are still insisting on a compromise on the name - which is more than this fabricated mish-mash of a country deserves - but such a settlement will serve other interests in the region.

It is also why all the "angry demands" and "claims" by these hi-jackers of history, which when seen all together, manage to mostly contradict themselves or end up in "indignant" yet baseless and historically absurd "arguments".

It also a sad state of affairs when a mixed group of slavo-Bulgarians, who are a left over from the Balkan wars and Tito's clumsy attempts of territorial gains (and access to the Mediterranean sea) try to hijack the ancient Greek name of Macedonia to give themselves an "identity".

Something which was clearly stated by Secretary of State Edward R. Stettinius (Dec. 26, 1944)This government considers talk of Macedonian “nation,” Macedonian “Fatherland,” or Macedonian “national consciousness” to be unjustified demagoguery representing no ethnic nor political reality, and sees in its present revival a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against Greece.

Any and all attempts to try and diminish this clear assessment is just another pathetic and desperate measure by these hapless Bulgarians.

Further more even Bulgaria doesn't recognize the existence of Macedonians even in the Republic of Macedonia quite rightly considering all FYROM "macedonians" as Bulgarians.

On the other hand, the heritage, cities and monuments of Alexander were and are GREEK
carved in marble that no devious or pathetic attempts to re-write history or brown nosing those who indulge in so-called "great games" can erase.

This sad and latest episode of the these displaced Bulgarians - who also have to deal with a large Albanian minority - is more a case of 'the mouse that roared' (with the cynical support of others with rather devious agendas) than a case of legitimate "claims" to a so-called "ethnic" identity.

It is time to put a stop to this nonsense and deal with the realities of not only the region but of the real world social-economic and environmental problems that we ALL have to face in THIS century.
