BERISA PROMISES RETURN OF MACEDONIAN PLACE NAMES
Diaspora.
Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisa paid a visit to South-Eastern Albania to cut the ribbon of a new highway construction project that will connect Pustec to Korca.
At the ceremony was present Macedonian mayor of Pustec, Edmond Temelko. At the meeting, the Albanian Prime Minister had promised the Macedonian community in Albania the return of Macedonian toponyms that were changed in the 1970's to Albanian names. Pustec, was renamed to Likenas.
"This visit is positive", says Edmond, "Though I have to be honest and say that we don't trust politicians in Tirana. On previous occasions we were promised things that never materialized."
Bad roads and infrastructure have a negative affect on the whole region, as it remains poor. Ethnic Macedonians who live there hope this will change soon. There are no official documents to pin point the number of Macedonians in Albania, however, according to the Macedonians in SE Albania, Tirana and other cities, there are at least 120,000 Macedonians.
