MERCATOR TO EXPAND TO MACEDONIA

National.

The largest Slovenian chain of supermarkets - Mercator - announced yesterday that it would continue expansion on the Balkans by opening stores in Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and Kosovo.

In the statement reported by Reuters, Mercator’s chief executive Ziga Debeljak said that, the economic crisis notwithstanding, Mercator remains open to all forms of expansion and growth in other countries.

The company plans to enter the markets of Macedonia and Kosovo by 2012. According to the Slovenian Business Weekly, Mercator bought land for a supermarket in Skopje in 2005. In February 2005 the company opened its regional branch - Mercator Macedonia - in Skopje.
