National.
he Ministry of Interior (MoI) within the final stage of its operation dubbed "Boomerang" detained Tuesday another 20 border policemen on suspicion of asking and taking bribes.
MoI says evidence collected throughout the operation indicated that a criminal group of 11 law enforcement officials were organised to take bribes.
In addition to the group of 11 policemen - who will be charged with taking bribes and abuse of office, nine other have been identified working with the two criminal groups that were busted last month.
On 25 August, 22 policemen from Tabanovce border control station were arrested on bribery suspicion.
Heads of shifts were the masterminds of the two criminal groups. At the end of each shift they divided the 'earned' amount of money according to the 'merit' principle - about EUR 100/day for each policeman.
The policemen demanded certain amount of money from foreigners entering and exiting the country and if the passengers refused to pay, they were left to wait at the border crossing for no reason.
Vehicles that failed to present green card to the policemen were also a subject of bribing, which also refers to guides of tourist buses.
