GREECE WITH A WARNING FOR MACEDONIA
National.
Greece warned Macedonia against raising high hopes about getting a date for start of accession negotiations for membership in EU unless the name row is resolved.
“What I can safely say is that it is clear that FYROM will not be given a date for start of negotiations unless the name issue is resolved,” said the spokesman of the Greek government Georgios Petalotis.
Kathimerini daily writes that for Greece, the ideal scenario would be to find a solution on the issue until December in order to avoid any delay of the beginning of Macedonia-EU negotiations.
The European Commission released the Progress Report on Macedonia on Wednesday and recommended launching of the membership negotiations.
The Report will be delivered to the EU Council, which is due to decide at the summit scheduled for December whether the European Union should start the accession talks with the Republic of Macedonia.
