EXPLORATION OF NEOLITHIC IN PELAGONIJA
National.
Establishment of the first Neolithic Research Centre in Macedonia should be officially presented in Bitola on the Day of Museums, 18th May. The centre will focus on already unearthed archaeological sites from this pre-historical period in the Pelagonija area as well as those that are yet to be discovered. The centre will operate within the Bitola Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture and Museum, and its initiators are Zoran Nikolovski, Director of the Institute and Skopje Architect Vangel Bozinovski.
Presentation of the centre will include not only a suitable lecture on the values of the Neolithic but an exhibition presenting hairstyle, jewellery and costumes from this pre-historical period.
“The operation of the centre will involve professionals from Bitola and external associates, archaeologists, architects, art historians. Funding will be on the state-level, and we have also received support of the Ministry of Culture to carry out the idea. This year, we will apply to the Ministry with research projects based on previous knowledge and results,” Nikolovski says.
The oldest discovered culture in this part of Macedonia so far is the so-called Velusina-Porodin culture, which does not mean that this was the oldest culture on this soil according to archaeologist Marija Vasileva because, she says, we have to take account of the population of the Balkans at much earlier times.”
“Archaeological examinations in our country have taken place for a short period and there has been lack of equipment and funds, which is the main reason for great parts of our history still missing,” she writes, inter alia, in the brochure “Where Is Our Past – Introduction to Pelagonija History,” published by VISOI Citizen Association of Archaeology Admirers in Bitola.
MD: Nice initiative! There is still so much to explore in Macedonia, who knows what else we will find under the Macedonian soil
