LAWMAKERS TABLE AMENDMENTS TO LAW ON INTERETHNIC COMMITTEE

National.

Macedonian Parliament kicked off the debate on the amendments to the Law on the Committee for Inter-Ethnic Relations, which was already approved by parliament.

The Representatives of parliamentary majority upheld two amendments tabled by opposition Liberal-Democratic Party (LDP). The lawmakers now review the rest of the amendments submitted by opposition parties.

According to these two amendments that won legislative approval, the prime minister is no longer empowered to convoke a session of the Committee for Interethnic Relations. The amendments envisage a one-year rotating presidency of the Committee.

Also subject to debate is an amendment tabled by opposition DUI, demanding that the law on use of languages be added to the list of laws to be voted in line with Badinter principle, i.e. double majority vote.

Government allies VMRO-DPPMNE and DPA said recently that the law on languages has not yet been adjusted by the governing coalition, and therefore, it was not added to the list of laws that require double majority vote.
