MACEDONIA SMOKES AT THE TOP
National.
According to The Economist's 2008 World Rankings Book, the average Macedonian (man, woman, and child) smokes 7.1 cigarettes per day, ranking our country on the Second place in the list of the Most Smoking Countries on Earth. That is very much!
Only our southern neighbours, the Greeks, smoke more than the Macedonians, they are ranked first with an average of 8.4 cigarettes per day. Russia is third and all other Balkan countries seem to score very high too.
It's obvious that smoking is most popular in this part of the world. Why? Are there any reasons for that behaviour? Or are the people on the Balkans just not serious enough about the dangers smoking carries? Or they just don't give a damn, and it has to do with our mentality, which is pretty much the same all over the Balkans.
Many countries start making campaign against smoking, banning it in public areas and even restaurants and night clubs. That's unthinkable for Macedonia. It is still far behind with such activities. Since Macedonians even smoke in Hospitals!
If you ask a Macedonian; Smoking or health? You will hear; 'Smoking!' without a doubt.
MD: Well, at least one thing we're good at! :)

Good post! I live now in Israel, and the mentality is also very similar here about smoking like in MK. At least, there's a culture of not smoking in places like restaurants or work. We should start somewhere. The government has to invest here in enforcing a law to ban smoking in obvious places like hospitals. No excuse.
