ANCIENTS LIGHTS NEW YEAR'S GIFTS
Culture.
The interior of the earth hides a lot of secrets. Sometimes, even the very mentioning of archaeological findings instigates excitement by the stories inherent to items, in particular small items that are fascinating with their form, ornaments and utilization.
Such are the ancient lights, found in the area of the Republic of Macedonia and examined by Antonio Jakimovski. Used in homes, public facilities, temples, shops, theatres, baths, mines and other places, they were also used during private ceremonies and were lit in front of the home doors (lucerna pro foribus), and were also often given as New Year’s gifts with suitable message and best wishes.
Lychnology is science examining lighting devices from the past starting from pre-history to the Middle Ages (it is seen as an accessory archaeological science with huge importance). Because of its utility and sacral function, those small items belong to findings that are often discovered during excavations in Macedonia. Besides being used as illumination devices in daily life: homes, public buildings and temples, people used them for ritual goals, and those items were often found as a funeral additions related to religious attitudes of the dead and their belief in other life.
MD: Very interesting.
