MACEDONIA MEETS NATO MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

The Pentagon believes that Macedonia, Albania and Croatia meet the criteria for NATO membership and will support their bids at the Alliance's summit in Bucharest, a senior US official said.
"As regards NATO enlargement, the Pentagon believes that military criteria are certainly met. Six weeks before the summit in Bucharest, we will ...to ensure that these three countries become members of the Alliance," said Daniel Fata, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense at the press conference after the meeting with defense ministers of the Adriatic Group (A3).
Nonetheless, Fata made clear that the United States would have only one out of 26 votes in Bucharest, so the three countries still had a lot to do to make the final effort towards the allied from the NATO in order to secure a positive outcome of the summit.
All the countries made studding progress in modernizing their ministries and armed forces, said Fata, adding that the US highly regarded the involvement if the three countries in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Fata expressed hope that name difference between Macedonia and Greece will be bridged in the current round of talks under the UN auspices.
