EXCAVATIONS AT YENI MOSQUE

Culture.

After a three-year break, excavations at the Yeni-Mosque, one of the most attractive historical monuments in the centre of Bitola dating from the 16th century are resumed. New activities are expected to confirm presumptions of archaeologists about a vanished mediaeval town from Byzantine times in the centre of Bitola. Examinations so far have revealed a part of a wall of a mediaeval town, remains of three churches, a necropolis and eight skeletons in the Yeni-Mosque foundations.

The start of the new excavations is expected in May when temperature rises because the building is subject to moisture. “The Yeni-Mosque project has been approved for this year and excavations are resuming where they stopped. The Ministry of Culture has allotted 1.5 million denars for the project,” Zoran Nikolovski, Director of the Institute and Museum in Bitola says. New excavations are also expected to also involve archaeologists from Turkey.
