NATO TRIES TO CHANGE GREECE'S MIND
National.
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will try to convince Greece in Athens today not to block the membership of Macedonia, BBC reports.
In today's commentary, BBC's correspondent from Athens announces the meeting between Scheffer and the Greek PM Costas Karamanlis, which will focus on the Greek-Macedonian dispute over the name.
Monday's visit of Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is part of a campaign of growing international pressure on Greece. NATO wants Macedonia beneath its umbrella as a safeguard against the country's dividing between the Macedonian majority and the Albanian minority, BBC's correspondent from Athens says.
But diplomats in Greece are sure that Scheffer's appeal to Greece not to use its veto will be rejected. Karamanlis has made it clear that unless the government in Skopje agrees to change its name, Macedonia, the veto will be applied.
The dispute is seen as a very petty one in many corners of the world, but Greece wants change of name as it is convinced that Macedonia has territorial designs on the Greek eponymous province, where Alexander the Great was born, the commentary says.
Citing the latest survey in Kathimerini newspaper, revealing that 84% of Greeks are in favour of vetoing if there is no compromise, BBC points out that Karamanlis has very little room for maneuver, especially when having in mind his narrow majority in the parliament.

That's a complete falsification.
Scheffer said clearly who is the NATO member and who's the aspiring one.
It's up to you to understand that.
