NIMETZ IN SKOPJE TODAY
National.
Matthew Nimetz, the UN mediator in the Macedonian-Greek talks over name differences, will arrive in Skopje on today for talks with the Macedonian top officials, A1 TV station cited UN sources as saying late Monday.
According to the same sources, it is possible for Nimetz to meet with the Greek mediator Adamantios Vassilakis the same day in Thessaloniki, however, there is still no confirmation about this meeting.
Nimetz's visit comes in the frameworks of a broader operation aimed at finding a solution on the name, which is managed primarily by USA. This time, the UN mediator is expected to act upon direct coordination with the State Department.
US Ambassador to Athens Daniel Speckhard initiated a meeting on Monday with the Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis.
The meeting, which took place just hours after the visit of the NATO chief Jaap De Hoop Scheffer to Athens, focused on the preparations for the Alliance's Summit in April. Greek sources said that seeking for a way to soften Greece's position on applying a veto on the expected invitation for Macedonia, was the only item on the agenda of the meeting.
MD: This is a sudden move after the talks ended without results last saturday. Why? We don't know, let's just hope Macedonia will not move a step, and can handle the pressure of Greece and Nato.
