GREECE'S VETO BECAUSE OF REFUSAL TO RECOGNIZE MACEDONIANS

National.

Greece's decision to veto an invitation to Macedonia to join NATO is "an irresponsible act motivated by its refusal to recognize the existence of a distinct Macedonian ethnic identity in the Republic of Macedonia as well as in Greece," EFA said.

The European Free Alliance (EFA) strongly condemns Greece's decision last week to veto an invitation to the Republic of Macedonia to join NATO. While EFA is appalled at Greece's decision, it is hardly surprising.

"Shameful decision to veto the Republic of Macedonia is a continuation of Greece's destabilizing behaviour in South Eastern Europe. Greece's decision was an irresponsible act motivated by its refusal to recognize the existence of a distinct Macedonian ethnic identity in the Republic of Macedonia as well as in Greece."

"This reckless and unfriendly act by Greece is not in accordance with the principles that a European country is supposed to espouse. The decision of the Karamanlis government to deny a country entry into Euro-Atlantic structures because of an absurd objection to the country's rightful name is highly irresponsible and an anti-European act," EFA said in a statement.

It is common knowledge that the source of Greece's behaviour on this issue is its continual and blatant refusal to recognize Macedonian identity, both in Greece and beyond. Indeed, Greece's aggressive behaviour on this issue is something not new to EFA.

The Rainbow, the party of Macedonians in Greece and member of EFA, called on the European Union to do more on these issues.

"It is time for the EU to do more on these issues. Being "UNITED in DIVERSITY" must not be simply declarative. The EU must be "UNITED in recognizing DIVERSITY". A good start would be to demands that Greece acts like 21st century European country and end its shameful and destabilizing policies on the Macedonian issue. In practice, this means recognizing the name of the Republic of Macedonia and recognizing the Macedonian and other minorities in Greece," Rainbow said.

MD: Well that's no real news for us either, but good to see Europeans knowing how the Greeks are

GREECE'S VETO, SUPPORTED BY FRANCE, SPAIN, LUXEMBURG, ITALY, GERMANY, AND OTHER COUNTRIES.
AGAINST GREECE'S VETO ONLY USA, FOR WELL KNOWN INTERESTS, AND HALF AGAINST, TURKEY, FOR SAME REASONS...
NATO DECLAIRED, UNANIMOUSLY, THAT SKOPIA HAS TO RESOLVE THE NAME ISSUE, SO TO ENTER THE ALLIANCE...

EFA is a marginal party in the EU and, it could be argued, with an occasionaly ambiguous attitude towards terrorism.
If you want the Greeks to open up to a particular minority, then, dear MD, your use of language does not help. You make it sound threatening (probably because you feel justified in being angry/fed up). Even if it turns your stomach - and I empathise with you - I suggest you also recognise the existence of Greek Macedonia (named as such since 1913), the right of the Greeks to be in Macedonia and to call themselves Macedonians, the historic massacre (genocide?) of the Pontians. Also accept that Athens recognises your individuality as a nation and the sanctity of your borders.
At the same time, you can continue defeding your position, but at least we will be doing it as family members, with shared pain, hopes and interests.

Greece holds more Macedonian artifacts than your pseudo "country". And they have hellenic inscriptions on them .
You shown your true colors by calling karamanlis a Nazi and claiming a "genocide" by the Greeks. You should have hired a PR firm from Kosovo to help you with that

The Nazi reference was by Forum magazine; they photoshoped Karamanlis a Nazi uniform (Captain?) but photoshoped the Nazi military insignia into Greek flags, medal, etc... They also puffed out his cheeks and gave him green eyes. In a way it was more funny than insulting. Forum was also taking the piss out of the Slav Makedonce fanatics who misuse the term Nazi whenever they can.

Before the WW2 & before Tito there was only one Macedonia - Greek Macedonia- come on how about getting all your facts before you attempt to take someone elses identity. It has been claimed by people from FYROM that their Macedonia covers most on Northern Greece including Katerini where Mt Olympus is. Does this mean the Ancient Greek Gods where actually slavs? I think not. Time for these slavs to get their own identity and stop stealing ours.
Also if Bush supports FYROM to be named Macedonia-which belongs to Greece - why doesn't he allow them to call themselves American from USA - and not use our name & identity

the only shameful act committed here is the theft of a name and history of one country to give meaning to the lies of another. greece acted well within its rights as a nato member according to the nato charter. the history, culture & name of macedonia belongs to greece and to its people only, not to some slav-come-lately usurpers of history to take for themselves and give meaning to their empty past. just face the fact the you are slavs of macedonia and wake up. greece has a history that has left a paper trail for at least the past 3,500 years. if this issue were to be settled in a court of law and evidence presented from both sides, f.y.r.o.m. would be given a life sentence for grand slander (with no parol !).
