NY TIMES: SHAME ON GREECE!

National.

The Macedonians walked out of the NATO summit on Thursday and we can’t say we blame them.

Croatia and Albania were granted membership in the western alliance at a leaders’ meeting in Bucharest, but Macedonia was barred for an absurd reason: Greece doesn’t like its name.

That decision shames Greece and it dishonors NATO, which has far more serious problems and challenges to worry about.

The name “Macedonia,” is shared by the former Yugoslav republic and by northern Greece. From the moment the former-Yugoslav Macedonia declared independence in 1991, the Greeks — reflecting byzantine Balkan politics — vehemently objected to the new state’s use of a name and symbols they regard as theirs.

As a result, the United Nations provisionally designated the country as “the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” — or, rather uneuphonically: FYROM.
Athens has since normalized relations and many countries, including the United States, have abandoned the clumsy FYROM in favor of Republic of Macedonia, which is what Macedonia calls itself.

A United Nations mediator tried to work out a compromise but in the end, Greece — a NATO member since 1952 — exercised its veto. The alliance operates on consensus.
Tiny Macedonia doesn’t threaten Greece under any name. In fact, bringing it into the NATO fold would enhance regional stability. Now, there are concerns Macedonia’s failure to gain alliance membership could fan nationalism and anti-Western sentiment as well as jeopardize its ability to join the European Union.

President Bush and European leaders should have worked harder at finding a solution to this corrosive problem before Greece exercised its veto.

Now they must ratchet up the pressure on Greece to achieve that compromise so that NATO’s insult to Macedonia is reversed as quickly as possible.

Barack Obama: FYROM must end hostile and irredentist propaganda against Greece

No Solution means No Invitation. This time we mean it.

THE IDENTITY CRISIS OF THE SKOPJANS [Skopians]

Skopjans Identity Crisis started when Tito of Yugoslavia aspired to extend his communist control over northern Hellas (Greece) to a sea exit on the warm waters of the Aegean Sea, also to share that sea exit with the fellow-communist regimes of the Communist International Commintern during the post-2WW East-West cold war hostilities. As the Yugoslav Socialist Republic of Vardaria-Banovina bordered on the historical Macedonia of the Hellenes, Tito transformed Vardaria to a Yugoslav Macedonia and pressed for integration of all parts, including Macedonia Aegeanska (i.e., ours of Northern Hellas), and Macedonia Pirrin of Bulgaria, to form a greater Macedonia communist country: that being a strategic plan of communist access-expansion into the Aegean and the Mediterranean Seas.

THE SOUTHERNMOST FORMER YUGOSLAV
REPUBLIC (FYROM) SHOULD NOT USE THE NAMES "MACEDONIA" AND MACEDONIAN TO DEFINE ITSELF AS AN INDEPENDENT STATE AND AS NATIONALITY

The attempts made by Skopians to provide evidences that the so called "Macedonian language" is the idiom spoken around Skopje can hardly persuade anyone. Their language, with the self-contained Slav tongue, was completely unknown until 1944 and no matter how hard one may try will find nothing to prove its existence. The language used by the Slav speaking inhabitants of the Southern Yugoslavia and southwestern Bulgaria was known to be a dilect of the Bulgarian language.

"Slav" redirects here. For the former Israeli settlement, see Slav (settlement).

The Slavic peoples are a linguistic and ethnic branch of Indo-European peoples, living mainly in Europe, where they constitute roughly a third of the population. Since emerging from their original homeland (most commonly thought to be in Eastern Europe) in the early 6th century, they have inhabited most of eastern Central Europe, Eastern Europe and the Balkans. [1] Many settled later in Siberia[2] and Central Asia[3] or emigrated to other parts of the world.[4][5]

Slavic settlers mixed with existing local populations and later invaders, thus modern Slavic peoples are considerably genetically and culturally diverse. Yet they are connected by speaking often closely related Slavic languages, and also by a sense of common identity and history, which is present to different extents among different individuals and different Slavic peoples.

NY Times ? please , wasn't NYT that pushed for the Iraq war with the imaginary WMDs ?
That POS toilet paper has no credibility.

FYROM

The ''Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia'' has no connection with the Historical Macedonia of Alexander and the Greeks, since the term is used only because they live in a close geografical area of the Historical Greek Macedonia.

The present political regime, useless try to confuse their young citizens that their slavs ancestors mixed with indigenus greek macedonians,so to giustify the conflict about the name issue with Greece.

But the statements of different political officers of FYROM confirm the truth.

Indians, Persians, Afgans, Egyptians are more related to Macedonians and Greek culture than Slavs of FYROM.

a. The former President of The FYROM, Kiro Gligorov said: ";We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35).

b. Also, Mr Gligorov declared: "We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That's who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia ...; Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century" (Toronto Star, March 15, 1992).

c. On 22 January 1999, Ambassador of the FYROM to USA, Ljubica Achevska gave a speech on the present situation in the Balkans. In answering questions at the end of her speech Mrs. Acevshka said: "We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great ...; Greece is Macedonia';s second largest trading partner, and its number one investor. Instead of opting for war, we have chosen the mediation of the United Nations, with talks on the ambassadorial level under Mr. Vance and Mr. Nemitz." In reply to another question about the ethnic origin of the people of FYROM, Ambassador Achevska stated that "we are Slavs and we speak a Slav language.";

d. On 24 February 1999, in an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Gyordan Veselinov, FYROM'S Ambassador to Canada, admitted, "We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian." He also commented, ";There is some confusion about the identity of the people of my country."

e. Moreover, the Foreign Minister of the FYROM, Slobodan Casule, in an interview to Utrinski Vesnik of Skopje on December 29, 2001, said that he mentioned to the Foreign Minister of Bulgaria, Solomon Pasi, that they "belong to the same Slav people.";

I wish you stupid Greeks 100 times more fires this year!!!You all deserve to die you fucking bastards.You are so stupid and you will always be, you dont now anything about your history, let alone Macedonias history. No other country in the world fights about such an obvious issue, Macedonia is Macedonia, and your province was ours, so be happy about that.I wish you everything worse
