MACEDONIA RANKS 87 IN GLOBAL PEACE INDEX
National.
Macedonia has emerged with a ranking of 87th in the Global Peace Index 2008.
The Index is a ranking of 140 countries – from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe – listed according to their peacefulness. Countries most at peace are ranked first. A lower score indicates a more peaceful country.
The Global Peace Index (GPI) has been compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, using a broad range of 24 indicators measuring both internal and external peacefulness of nations.
Macedonia has moved up two places compared with GPI 2007. This year it received a favourable score for its low level of deaths from organized internal conflict. Macedonia comes in 18th place out of 24 in its region. Better ranked are Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania and Serbia.
Iceland tops the rankings as the most peaceful country. The Scandinavian countries are among most peaceful.
