LAKE OHRID 3 MILLION YEARS OLD
National.
Lake Ohrid is over three million years old, with three tectonic forces still active.
According to a preliminary study conducted by the Ohrid-based Hydro-Biological Institute and German Institute for Geology and Mineralogy, seated in Cologne, Lake Ohrid has a life span of more than 3 million years.
During the preliminary study, samples were taken from sediments of the lake's bottom at all depths. Further analyses should give an answer to the exceptionally high level of endemism in Lake Ohrid. According to scientists, the large endemism in Lake Ohrid is closely connected to the old age of the lake.
According to Berndt Wagner of the Cologne Institute, further studies on the sediment are expected to reveal the entire history of the Lake Ohrid. Therefore, the research will continue in the next decade, he added.
The research, worth around 4 million euros, will continue in 2009. The Cologne Institute will provide more than 60% of funds though the International Corporation for Research. Macedonian government is expected to contribute 100.000 euros.
MD: Very interesting! This lake is certainly one of the oldest in the world, if not the oldest, and also the deepest in Europe. Lake Ohrid looks more like a sea!
