Until the end of this year the Skopje airport will most likely get the name; "Sveti Pavle". It is still not decided yet, the government announced that "Alexander the Great" is a strong option too. There were also 2 other names; "Justinian the first" and "Sveti Nikola" but those ideas didn't manage to survive.
"The name Sveti Pavle fits precisely in the governments campaign for presenting Macedonia worldwide, we will get Macedonia the image of a biblical country," the supporters of the Sveti Pavle project say.
"Only Macedonia and Palestine are mentioned in the bible, that's a story which we can sell culturally and economically" they added.
Surrounding the name "Alexander the Great" there is the dilemma of worsening bilateral relations with neighbouring Greece in a time Macedonia needs international help the most. The move could be seen as a political provocation.
"When we talk about Alexander the Great, we think of his civilizated and humanitarian dimension," the promoters of the Alexander project say.
"Alexander is the promoter of Globalization, of unifying a country with many nations, he was one of the most important figures for the world and that's why he deserves an airport being named after him," Government officials explain.
When decided, Ohrid airport will most likely get the second choice intended for Skopje's airport.
MD: Who's a better promoter for Macedonia than Alexander the great? we couldn't wish us anything better. So the airport should be named Alexander, and if they see it as a provocation, so be it. We have the right to use his name more than any other nation in this world
