NO CONCESSION ON CONSTITUTIONAL NAME

National.

Application of the constitutional name of Macedonia for both domestic and foreign use is the position that Macedonia will hold on steadfastly during the future talks over this issue, President Branko Crvenkovski said.

"Our approach in the future talks on this issue will be open and frank, with an aim to close it as soon as possible. However, we will remain steadfast on our position that the constitutional name of our country has to be applied in both domestic and foreign use", Crvenkovski said in an interview for Alsat-M TV station.

Crvenkovski said it is unlikely to reach an agreement with Greece on the issue in the new year 2007.

"The maneuvering space that would enable finding a mutually acceptable solution is rather narrow", Crvenkovski said.

As regards the Greece's threats of imposing a veto on Macedonia's NATO and EU bids, the President reminded that "the Interim Agreement signed by Greece and Macedonia in 1995 includes a provision saying that Greece shell not obstruct Macedonia's integration in any international organization or association, if our country insists to do so under its constitutional name, even without providing prior Greece's consent".

"If they attempt to obstruct our Euro-Atlantic integration, that would constitute violation of the Interim Agreement, which actually servers as a basis for the ongoing negotiations, led under UN auspice in New York ", Crvenkovski said in an interview for Alsat-M TV station.

MD: Since the renaming of Skopje's airport into Alexander the Great, this whole Macedonia-Greek conflict heatened up again. The Greeks invited Nimitz to Athens. Later on he will visit Skopje too.
