EXCEPTIONAL VALUE IN NATIONAL BANK VAULTS

National.

Most specimens at the Numismatic Collection in the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia belong to the subcollection of Roman coins (republican, imperial and provincial). The reason for this predominance of Roman coins is the staff’s concern to pay attention to representation of any types and variants that marked that era, which abounded in a very rich coin production, besides to quality of examples in the systematic enriching of the collection, Maja Hadzi-Maneva, Custodian at the National Bank Numismatics Section.

From the earliest coins in this subcollection, bronze nickels of the Roman conquestors Gaius Publius and Lucius Fulcinius, coined in Macedonia in 168-166 B.C. to magnificent tetradrachms with Macedonian shield on the averse as well as bronze currencies of Macedonian towns that coined nickels with the images of Roman emperors and members of their families, the Numismatic Collection of the Macedonian National Bank offers special opportunities for exploration of this part of our monetary history. Besides separate examples, the Collection has a number of group findings where six safes of them belong to the subcollection of Roman coins. The safes are a solid base for scientific work, i.e. they enable perception of a series of aspects related to money circulation, coining activity, monetary and political history etc.

“It is my great pleasure to say that our collection has specimens the importance of which goes beyond the boundaries of the local,” Hadzi-Maneva says. “Above all, I would mention the collection of coins made in the Roman Municipium of Stobi, where the only active forge in present-day Macedonia was located in the Roman Era between the 1st and 3rd centuries," she added.

MD: The collection of Stobi coins is exceptionally rich, about 2500 coins, and is the largest in the world.
