KOCANI ORCHESTRA AMONG BEST BRASS BRANDS IN THE WORLD
Culture.
Macedonian “Kocani Orchestra” has been included in the list of groups that represent modern Balkan music, comprised by popular U.S. Internet magazine “Stylus”.
Besides the Macedonian band, “the guide to modern Balkan sounds” also includes legendary Serbian musician Saban Bajramovic, 12-member Romanian band “Fanfer Ciocarlia”, Boban Markovic, as well as several bands which do not come from the region, but use its sounds in their music. These are “Devotchka” from Denver, as well as “Balkan Beat Box” and “Gogol Bordello” from New York.
List authors say that “Kocani Orchestra” is famous for the use of four tubas, along with the definition “funkiest exponents of the Balkan brass band style”.
“The band has secured its place at the soundtrack of film ‘Borat’, following its album ‘Alone at My Wedding’ in 2002. Unlike all other bands on the list, the band applies stylish changes through compositions, instead of arrangements or sound ‘layering’”, reads the “Stylus” text on the Macedonian band.
“The jazzy, barebones sound gives remixers an advantage that otherwise packed-to-the-hinges Balkan brass doesn’t have, making them a unique fit for the ‘Electric Gypsyland” compilation. While any genre mixed down and appropriated for techno is no longer a shock, any kind of joint venture with Animal Collective certainly is”, reads the review.
The band’s songs have been remixed by musicians and bands such as Senor Coconut, Mercan Dede, Cibelle and “Animal Collective”, while their versions are put in the first and second part of compilation “Electric Gypsyland”.
MD: The Kocani orchestra is really popular in the world, playing at many festivals and concerts.
