The food that is being imported is safe, as well as the products of domestic origin. This is being confirmed by the continuous analyses conducted by authorised institutions that averagely demonstrate approximately 2% of positive samples.
Lazarevska announced the start of a monitoring program in 2008, envisaging Macedonia to independently conducts analyses of certain food products. According to her, the risk analyse will be the main method for food control.
Minister of Health Imer Selmani said that Macedonia in recent years have made great breakthrough in terms of food safety.
- A new Food Safety Law was adopted that is fully harmonised with the European legislature and 22 new rulebooks for food control. Furthermore, continuous education for the employees is being executed, whereas the procedure for procurement of equipment for prompt risks detection is under way, said Selmani.
He added that Macedonia was making headway as well considering the institutions in charge of providing safe food. He noted that the production of safe and quality food not only wins the consumers' confidence, but also enables the opening of foreign markets.
According to Fouere, Macedonia doesn't provide sufficient support for traditional products, unlike EU that has developed many programs directed towards their preservation. - There's huge potential for organic food production, but it is not used. Hence, coordination among the Government, business community and consumers is necessary, emphasised Fouere.
MD: The Tuesday meeting was organised by the Food Directorate, whose aim was to include Macedonia in EFSA activities for 2008.
