EVLIYA CELEBI ON MACEDONIA
Culture.
A book, “Evliya Çelebi” about one of the greatest travel writers of the Ottoman Period has been published recently. As the title says, Çelebi’s travel stories about Macedonia are first presented here in a more comprehensive way. The translation and foreword is by Ilhami Emin.
“Çelebi travelled throughout Macedonia, to the north in Skopje, and to the east and west and down to Thessalonica in the south. According to his own words, he was born in Istanbul on 25th March 1611. Unfortunately, the day of his death and the place the great world travel author was buried are not known. In his significant work “Seyahatnamee” (Travel story) Çelebi said he was proficient in spoken Arabian and Persian besides Turkish, and he also knew some Greek and understood Latin.
He was travelling for 51 years, the publisher, Slovo, says. They explain that the book also contains descriptions of churches and monasteries. “Çelebi's travelling stories also speak vividly about the first signs of gradual weakening of the Ottoman Empire and increasing presence of the Macedonian population in towns in Macedonia,” the publisher says.
