SEE NETWORK APPEALS FOR LARGER PROTECTION OF REGIONAL HERITAGE

Culture.

SEE Heritage Network has sent an urgent appeal to local and central authorities in Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Serbia, Croatia, and Montenegro for protection of cultural and natural heritage in the region.

The transition process in this region causes an uncontrollable urban and rural development, especially through inadequate spatial planning, giving the town of Ohrid as an example. The Network also remarks on the lack of protective mechanisms or their adequate application for protection of cultural and natural heritage, mentioning the Old Skopje Bazaar among others.

Moreover, as a result of negligence, natural wealth and cultural landscapes of Ohrid Lake is endangered, says the Network.
SEE Heritage Network, which is comprised of about ten civic associations from regional countries, asks for full application of the principles for cultural heritage protection in the processes of planning and development, larger participation of experts, more active inclusion of local communities, as well as participation of the public in the decision-making processes.
