Macedonian police launched a comprehensive search operation for the gunmen who killed one and wounded two members of the special unit ALFAs.
All border crossings have been blocked and intensive checks of the vehicles is under way.
Afrim Arifi (39), a member of the ALFAs unit, was killed in the armed attack that took place near the Science and Mathematics Faculty in Skopje at about 12:30 hrs on Wednesday.
Another two members of the unit, aged 31 and 33, are wounded. One is in critical condition, while the other one is lightly injured.
Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska revealed the details of the armed incident at a press conference held this afternoon.
As to the motives of the armed attack, police did not rule out the possibility of retaliation after the recent arrests of a number of criminals, but revealed no additional information.
The police patrol arrived at the parking lot of the Science and Mathematics Faculty from the Cento District to conduct regular activities.
The Mazda car in which ALFAs were patrolling, passed by a Golf car with darkened windows.
There were three or four gunmen traveling in the Golf, who opened fire toward the police vehicle from an automatic weapon in a shooting that lasted about 30 seconds.
