US, GERMAN AMBASSADORS CALL FOR PEACEFULL, FAIR AND DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS IN SARAJ, SKOPJE
National.
US Ambassador to Macedonia Gillian Milovanovic expects Saraj's municipal elections to be held in a fair and democratic atmosphere without violence, demonstrating Macedonia's ripe democracy.
"I believe meeting the codex for behaviour for free and fair elections in Saraj is far more important than who's going to win them," said Milovanovic after Wednesday's visit to MOST Civic Association.
According to her, having only domestic monitors at the elections was essential. Moreover, Milovanovic expressed her support for MOST monitoring mission, underlying its monitoring skillfulness, which had been demonstrated both in Macedonia and abroad. US Embassy's mobile teams will also monitor the election process in Saraj together with EU representatives who will be additionally deployed in static teams, coordinated by the EU Mission Office in Skopje.
German Ambassador to Macedonia Ralf Brett considered Saraj municipal election as being extremely relevant for Macedonia due to the incidents that took place in previous election processes. He called on political parties to do everything in their power, thus organising peaceful, fair and democratic elections.
Answering on journalist question regarding any possible election irregularities, Milovanovic stressed that relevant Macedonian institutions for implementation of elections were responsible for detecting and sanctioning irregularities, not the international community. MOST will be in charge of monitoring the municipal local election in Saraj with 82 accredited monitors, as well as monitoring the State Election Committee.
US, Germany and Netherlands' Embassies in Macedonia back domestic monitoring of the forthcoming municipal elections in Saraj. The elections were scheduled after Saraj's ex-mayor Imer Selmani was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister.
