GOVERNMENT STARTS WITH REVITALIZATION OF WILDFIRE AREAS

National.

Macedonian Government started executing the action plan aimed at revitalization of the areas that were damaged in massive wildfires that held grip of the country for weeks last summer.

The action for clearing the scorched forest areas commenced today in Bitola. The operation is being funded and carried out by the public enterprise Macedonian Forests, Makfax's correspondent reported.

"We will start with cutting down the charred wood to proceed with purging of the forest and finally, forestation of a total area of 2.140 hectares will take place", said Mitko Stojanovski, Director of the Bitola's branch office of PE Macedonian Forests.

The planned activities include also setting up of 25-kilometers long fire protection walls as well as 5-kilometer pathways, Stojanovski said.

The raging wildfires that ravaged throughout the Bitola area last July destroyed 6.000 hectares of forests, causing damages estimated at 300.000 denars. The total devastated area in Macedonia in wildfires reached 32.000 hectares.

MD: The areas are to be planted with pine, maple, ash, birch and chestnut trees.
