NAME NEGOTIATIONS LIKELY TO CONTINUE IN SKOPJE AND ATHENS
National.
The negotiations over differences between Macedonia and Greece on the name that were regularly held in New York up until now, will go on in Skopje and eventually in Athens after the Christmas Holidays.
Greek media reported this, citing the UN mediator Matthew Nimetz who held talks with the Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis in Athens on Wednesday.
Nimetz suggested the next meeting to be held in Skopje with Macedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki as the host. If that meeting has success, the following one would be held in Athens with Bakoyannis as the host.
At today's meeting, Nimetz and Bakoyannis agreed to speed up efforts for the finding of a mutually accepted solution on the name issue.
According to Nimetz, the problem in the bilateral relations can be resolved as the key for its resolution is the name.
He stressed that there are different interpretations but that both sides want to reach a mediated agreement.
Georgios Koumoutsakos, the spokesman of the Greek Foreign Ministry, said that the meeting was held in "a friendly atmosphere."
The UN special envoy Matthew Nimetz is also scheduled to meet with the Greek PM Costas Karamanlis later on today.
MD: Prior to this visit to Athens, Matthew Nimetz was in Skopje a few days ago.
