MACEDONIANS CELEBRATED DUTCH QUEENS DAY
National.
More than a thousand people filled the streets of Skopje last week to celebrate the Dutch Queen Day by wearing orange shirts and, of course, driving bicycles.
The event was sponsored by the Dutch Ambassador to Macedonia, Simone Filipini.
"We have over 15,000 km of bycicle paths in the Netherlands. It is very healthy way of transportation, good not just for you, but for the environment. We will aim to do the same in Macedonia" said Mrs Filipini.
People from Macedonian political life joined the manifestation wearing orange shirts and driving bycicles. Macedonia's Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska was also there.
Trifun Kostovski, Skopje's mayor, saluted the idea of bicycle paths in Skopje, adding the congestion of not just cars, but people in Skopje is so great, we need to expand the 1.5 km bicycle path to much more than that. The event was used to promote the new 1.5 km bicycle path. MINA correspondent from Skopje said that many of the people gathered on the manifestation expressed greater desire for biking than driving a car.
"I had a car, sold it, now I bike. I feel absolutely great when I go to work with a bicycle. I actually get home faster with a bike, than when I drove, because of the congestion on rush hour. I also save money on gasoline prices," said Nestor, a Skopje resident who brought his daughter for the manifestation.
MD: Very interesting, but Skopje is certainly not a city to bike :) way too dangerous with the traffic chaos!!! At least not now, maybe in the future...?

Skopje is nice for biking and not more dangerous than other cities! The city offers many quiet and side paths accessible for bikers, up to the very center and even along most of the main boulevards.
