PEOPLE IN LERIN PROUD OF NIKOLAS GRUIOS
National.
Take a moment to read this interesting story about the background of Macedonian Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski. It's quite long, but worth reading!
At first we couldn’t believe what we were told by the residents of the village Krushoradi (Ahlada), Lerin Region, Aegean Macedonia when we went there for a visit. They told us that “Prime Minister Gruevski’s grandfather lived here. That’s where his house is, this is where he lived and there is where he is buried. You didn’t know that the Prime Minster’s roots are from Lerin Region?” said one of the residents. Of course we didn’t believe it, that’s why we came here, to find out for ourselves. The village was beautiful, clean, a quiet setting all surrounded by grass and beautiful green scenery.
When we approached another house one of the residents, pointing to a man in the yard washing his jeep said, “This is Prime Minister Gruevski’s second cousin, his name is Spiro Nikolaidis.”
“Is this true? Are you a relative of Prime Minister Gruevski?” I asked. “Yes, it is true,” he said.
He couldn’t speak Macedonian very well so we continued our conversation in English. He told us that Talo Gruevski, Prime Minister Gruevski’s father also lived in the village Krushoradi until he was nine years old at which point he moved to Skopje where he is to this day. Prime Minister Gruevski’s grandfather Nikola Gruios (or Kole Gruevski) however, spent his entire life in the village and after his death he was buried there. Nikola fought on the side of the Greek army against the Italians and was killed in 1939. Spiro also told us that Talo, the Prime Minister’s father comes here every year on August 15 but that he has never seen his second cousin. He was told that he visited there once when he was younger. The Gruevski house has always been empty but their relatives look after it.
Spiro took us to Nikola Gruios’s grave to assure us that indeed the Gruevski’s are truly part of this community. We found a large monument located about fifty meters away from the house and inscribed on it in Greek letters were the words “Nikolaos Grouios”.
Was this indeed our Prime Minister’s grandfather? We made inquiries at VMRO-DPMNE and they confirmed what we found, that our Prime Minister’s roots are indeed from Lerin Region and that both his grandfather and father are from there.
In spite of what the Greek government and Greek media think of him, the Krushoradi residents are very proud of Prime Minister Gruevski. Right after the Bucharest Summit, “Ta Nea” a Greek newspaper published a piece calling him “The Mean Boxer of Skopje”. Another newspaper highlighted the fact that Gruevski had roots from “Lerin the Greek City ”. According to another story published by “The Nea”, last year when Gruevski’s daughter was born he allegedly ordered the orchestra to play “Greek songs”.
On a different subject, we found out that last year vandals had damaged the memorial where 1,200 Partisans of the Democratic Army of Greece are buried and Macedonians from Aegean Macedonian organizations are suing the vandals for the damage.
Exploring the village Krushoradi we found that is has one of the richest coal mines in Lerin Region. There is the beautiful Spiridon Church which was built on top of the foundation of an old Macedonian school. We also found out that all the residents in this village speak Macedonian.
The churches in Lerin Region, we found, are very beautiful and peaceful as they stand quiet amidst lush green surroundings. One feels as if entering a holy temple in the middle of an oasis where one’s soul finds peace from the moment one enters. This is how we felt as visitors but I did not get the same impression about the locals. I can see that they pay attention to tradition; they celebrate Easter, paint eggs, fast; but are short on enthusiasm. I also noticed that when we made enquiries about visiting this community their reaction about our timing was lukewarm. They would have preferred that we come on May 1st or Ilinden. I had to inquire!
What we basically found out is that people here were not generally happy, especially with the Greek Church. They feel the Greek Church gets too involved in politics and tries to run peoples lives. “It is forcefully trying to turn us into Greeks,” said one person. “The Greek Church is too much involved in politics and tries to meddle in our lives,” said another. “When I baptized my daughter I wanted to call her Donka,” said one person “but the priest said no! It will have to be Domna because Donka is not a Greek name.”
“If the Church had its way it would even make Jesus Greek. This is why we are not enthusiastic about church, especially the men. This is also why we prefer to celebrate May 1st and Ilinden when a lot of people come and we have traditional music and dances.”
“No matter how it is, Easter is an important holiday for all Christians but not the way it is in this part…” said Pando Ashlakov (or Panaiotis Anastasiadis) from Ovchareni, without finishing his sentence.
The people here, including their neighbours who joined us, treated us very well with fat free bean soup for lunch, because of the fast, and traditional Macedonian music. So I had to make a comment, partly in jest, that “to an outsider all seems well here and you are lucky.” Unfortunately that was inappropriate for me to say.
“My daughter’s name in the documents is Domna, I am Aristisiadis. We are learning our mother tongue from the Macedonian radio and television. We have a dictatorship here, not a democracy. It is difficult to live in a state where only one ethnicity is recognized and it is not your ethnicity. Now you tell me how lucky are we?” a woman replied.
As a group we went to St. Georgija Church in Ovchareni where we met the Priest Panaioti. The church was half full but the priest assured us more would come, most men don’t arrive until past 8 pm . He also told us that our Easter traditions are almost identical to theirs. The priest knew this because he had been to Bitola and had performed liturgy there.
While we were there the local people told us a story about this church which has been circulating locally but had not been told to outsiders. The story is that the place where the church stands today, 15 years ago used to be a green field. About 15 years ago an older woman told us of a reoccurring dream she had of a church being buried under that field. When we tried to plough the field, our tractor kept stalling. So curious to see what was underneath, one day we decided to dig and low and behold we found the remnants of a beautiful church. We built this one right on top of it and it is our pride and joy.
It was evening now and time for us to go. These people looked after us for the past two days and it was time to let them get on with their preparation for the May 1st celebration.
As we were leaving this Good Friday we noticed the gray clouds above, gray among the lush green like the lives of the people we met here.
We soon arrived in the Republic of Macedonia which also was lush green, no different from the place we left in Lerin Region. The only obstacle in nature’s continuity here is this out of place border separating them.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Michelos. And Hellenass Oppppppppps! This article could not come in at a better time. You have eyes but you don’t see. You have ears but you don’t hear. You have a brain but……….
I remind Michelos of your quote:
“And let me clear my point : I rarely go to Florina and all the times I was there I never saw or heard something that connect the people there to your country. “
Where's your NAZI boots now?
Please Michelos leave the history of 400BC alone cause you can’t even get the present day right. It's embarrasing, really.
All your posts and assertions have of little substance.
A greek website (very well and comprehensively put together) does not even hold Alexander the Great to be Greek. I won’t tell you which one, I’ll leave it to you to find out.
I can’t believe your Greeks priests tell the citizens what to name their kids. But what’s the difference your government is trying to tell a whole country to change its name.
The turks never wanted to change Macedonia and its name. Their main concern was religion not ethnicity. So if you converted to their faith you are still able to be a Macedonian. The Bulgarians and greeks broke away from the Ottoman yoke 100 years before Macedonia therefore they had more time to exert their influence in Macedonia by introducing churches and schools in their native tongue.
Remember you greeks live in a regime of forced assimilation. You are just puppets. It has worked because you have been bought over more money, employment and a standard of living.

1. The former President of The FYROM, Kiro Gligorov said: “We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35).
See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKVlty4FsZo
2. Also, Mr Gligorov declared: "We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That's who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia… Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century" (Toronto Star, March 15, 1992).
3. On 22 January 1999, Ambassador of the FYROM to USA, Ljubica Achevska gave a speech on the present situation in the Balkans. In answering questions at the end of her speech Mrs. Acevshka said: "We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great … Greece is Macedonia’s second largest trading partner, and its number one investor. Instead of opting for war, we have chosen the mediation of the United Nations, with talks on the ambassadorial level under Mr. Vance and Mr. Nemitz." In reply to another question about the ethnic origin of the people of FYROM, Ambassador Achevska stated that "we are Slavs and we speak a Slav language.”
4. On 24 February 1999, in an interview with the Ottawa Citizen, Gyordan Veselinov, FYROM'S Ambassador to Canada, admitted, "We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian." He also commented, “There is some confusion about the identity of the people of my country."

Very interesting article. One sentence, though, raises credibility issues. In the 5th paragraph it reads: "Nikola fought on the side of the Greek army against the Italians and was killed in 1939." The Italians didn't attack Greece until 28 October 1940. So what is this 1939 all about? Is it a typo? Mr. Nikolaidis' memory lapse? Or is it just lost in Chris Stefou's translation?
Posted by Anonymous | 23:10
Translation is very tricky so is older peoples memory , 1939/1940 not really a massive issue. Wait until you are older mate?? Italy invaded Albania 1939,Italy invded Greece from ports in Albania and most likely startd from April 1939. Time lines are also a tricky business when recorded through some life threatening times.Try to find all the original people who documented facts about the wars???????????/
Posted by Anonymous | 01:20
Every sigle word you write people from FYROM is lie....
"Nikola had fought for the Democratic Army of Greece (DAG) in the Greek - Italian war. Was killed in 1939."
The Italians attack Hellas 28 October 1940, how he killed 1939??

It's really typical of the hapless greeks to discuss an issue of very litte significance. What was the exact date he died and the reason can be determined with extra research.
All the while forgetting about the big picture to take away from the article.
That is Greece's lies, propaganda, cover up and denial of human rights to macedonians in their own country.
Posted by Anonymous | 06:52
OK. I will the history of 400bc alone. You proved nothing but you believe that your history is related to what happened at that time.
Maybe my posts and assertions have little substance but non of your posts prove it. You still do not answer to what connect you with the past you claim.
Now, about today…
I will be the last man on earth that will defend the Greek Church. THE VERY LAST. What the article says about church and politics. I confirm it!
I always hated the way that the church is trying to manipulate people according to government’s will.
But..this doesn’t prove something more. The people that the article describes may exist. BUT I HAVENT SEEN THEM. Hey! I am not a reporter and I am not trying to search hidden minorities! You may say I should not speak for things I don’t know, but I never said they don’t exist. I said I haven’t seen them!
About the Turks you mention.. You talk about the ottoman Turks? Because at that time Macedonia what just a province. Nothing more. What they were interest in was not to change our (and your) Ethnicity but our religion, which was even worse. If you prefer the Turks, you are free to go.
What drives me mad is that everything a Greek says is propaganda. You call it propaganda before you read it! Somebody said that the Italian war started on October of 1940 and you called it propaganda! We are not here to judge if the people that were speaking to the reported were telling the truth but tell me, you people, from the other side, don’t you ever doubt about what the news are telling to you? Never try to judge if they say the truth?
Well... I try to do that when I listen to our news and that’s a reason for being here, on this site.

MICHELOS; YES YOU ARE RIGHT RE YOUR GREEK ORHODOX CHURCH AND YES WE ARE ALL ENTITLED TO OUR INDIVIUAL BELIEFS.I AM NON GREEK AND NON MACEDONIAN SO THATS PUTS ME A A MORE NEUTRAL POSITION ON THIS SITE. I THINK IT IS SAD YOUR GOVERNMENT IF GUILTY? PERSECUTES MACEDONIANS AND OTHERS WHICH ARE NON GREEK.2008 WE SHOULD BE LESS NASTY TOWARDS EACH OTHER. REPUBKIC MACEDONIA SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE AND VISA VERSA(GREECE)HISTORY IS WRITTEN FOR AND AGAINST GREECE AND REPUBLIC MACEDONIA. YOU ALL NEED ALEKSANDARS DNA TO PROVE THAT DISCUSSION.
Posted by Anonymous | 11:19
If our government is guilty then, definitely, it’s sad. What is even sadder is that many times the church was trying to control the government and not the opposite. You wonder if this is possible? It happened not many years ago.
If persecutes of non-Greek happened then it’s sad and truth has to be restored. However, we must hear all sides and examine all available evidence. I will remind to the readers of this site that after the WWII we had civil war in Greece. It was the communists against the national army. I am sure you know that civil war is the worst war of all. Both side made terrifying crimes. Many families were split and fighting each other. For long time, after the civil war, there was still discrimination between nationalists and communists. My grandfather was on the communist side and yes; he suffered from our past government. He is 100% Greek but he was always a 2nd class citizen.
Greeks will leave "Macedonia" if "Macedonians" stop mislead the public. I have to remind you that it was Gruevski that put flowers on below a map of “united” Macedonia. And I ask you, who shall leave the other alone? I heard all the time about Macedonia reunion, that they will get back their land etc. Which land? When it belonged to them? How they have more rights than we have? When such questions come, they call it propaganda. But the map of united Macedonia is not....?

The value of the news items of australian macedonian weekly is dubious - to say the least.
Its site propagates an irredentist vision against FY/ROM's neighbours that goes against the interest of Skopje and its sensible intelligentsia & politicians.
Chris Stefou/ov is a Greek with the imagination of a Greek... So Greeks are free to go against 'Athens'. Is it the same in Skopje?
Posted by Anonymous | 14:50
Hey dick where you get your information about Australian Macedonian Weekly. You from Australia Alfavitas?? Most of you reject Greeks's ive in Australia anyway and bullshit about Macedonians to the Australian public.
Posted by Anonymous | 16:14
Most of us reject Greeks that live in Australia? And where did you get that information?
Also tell me, you as “Macedonian”, how easily would you accept an article in the “Australian Greek Weekly” or a similar paper? Wouldn’t you have some doubts about the information that is contained in that paper?
It’s very obvious that, a paper with that name will always take your side. It’s normal and expected! Come on, you can’t blame us because we believe that this paper takes your side only!
Posted by Yiannis | 16:27
Greeks dont bullsh*t against Macedonians, or against Peloponnesians, or against Cretans... but they do get upset about non-Greeks claiming to be Macedonians!
However, I'm a bit more easy going... because, as the soap says:
Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours with a little understanding
you can find the perfect blend.

It's funny how all the pro-Skopjian puppets post anonymously. No balls to even post under an artificial username. They are so stupid that even they didn't notice the name of the translator. He's one of the biggest bullshit propagandists ever to renounce his Greek roots. A real gennitsaros. We don't want parasites like him anyway. So whenever I see his name, I always question the content. And I don't accept bullshit about hostilities starting in 1939 between Greece and Italy. That's plain bullshit. The first hostile action by Italy towards Greece came on August 15, 1940, and Italy went on a full offensive on October 28, 1940. Skopjians, stop lying to yourselves and to the world. If Gruevski has indeed Greek roots, then all he is is a son of a Greek communist bitch whose family had to leave Greece towards the end of the Greek civil war. That's what most of you are anyway. Na pate na gamithite, malakes.

The map of Macedonia (as a whole) with Goce Delcev represents the past not the future. Your paranoia is just turning to anger. How would you like us to portray Macedonia in 1903? This is evidence that you twist an event and turn it into anti ROM’n propaganda.
Let me tell you one thing for free: You may have changed places, names and people post 1913 but you can do nothing about Pre 1913. Sorry to disappoint you Greeks.
In all my time I have never encountered a plan by Macedonians to retrieve the land. Its just Greek paranoia (myth) turned into a reality.
I only wanted to bring your comment to light because:
1. It is a terribly inaccurate statement to make,
2. It is typical statement made by grokomani
3. No, your statement was not a miscalculation, correction or omission but DENIAL.

Hey gialtouridis would it make you feel better if I posted as Big Bird. Then I will have balls hey?

Excuse mr Anonymous 02:35…
You may never encounter such a plan, and I am happy to hear it. What worries me is that this piece of paper was in the same photo with your prime minister, putting flower below it. Even if you don’t believe in such plan (trust me, I believe you when you say that), you must accept that this picture shows something. It’s like a symbol. A message to your people but also a message for us! And you expect not to answer to that message? You expect us to ignore it?
Now, if you want to talk about the past… we can go very deep in the past and we will start talking about the same things… things like the ancient language… people’s names… ancient city’s names etc… And I noticed that you can on easily participate in these kind of discussions!

I think that on the internet, people should post content for which they would not be 'ashamed' of posting under thier real name. The only reason I sign 'Alfavitas' (and with a different name in Wikipedia) is because these are not academic sites and there are some 'overenthusiastic' people out there...
In this spirit, PM Gruevski has relatives who clearly identify as Greeks. His village was also known as a mixed village (Christians and Muslims). It volumtarily came under the Patriarchate and, in a way, still does. Ethnic issues are recent additives.

And for you anonymous wanna-be bloggers. Posting a username is not a matter of freedom of expression. You post a username so that your comment may be better identified when it receives a reply. I figured a monkey could understand that.

I challenge every Skopjian propagandist to prove to the world with credible evidence if there was a non-Greek Macedonian consciousness at any time before 1878.
For over 2,000 years, between 168 B.C, when ancient Macedonia fell to Rome, up until 1878, there has not been even one non-Greek documented reference claiming a Macedonian identity. I will not engage in dialogue as to the origin of the ancient Macedonians before 168 B.C. since any serious historian will verify that they were undeniably Greek. Even Kiro Gligorov dismissed any Slavic claims to ancient Macedonia, shortly before the assassination attempt on his life. Also, independent verifications only. No Skopjian propagandist websites or references.
After the rejection of the San Stefano Treaty of 1878 by the Great Powers and its subsequent successor of that same year, the Treaty of Berlin, a so-called Macedonian revolution was started by Bulgarians headed by Gotse Delchev and pseudo-Macedonian but Bulgarian in origin bands such as the IMRO (guess what the 'M' stands for). They tried to take the Macedonian region which was promised to them by the Ottoman-Russian agreement in San Stefano, as part of a Greater Bulgaria, but denied to them in Berlin. Others such as the Serb Stojan Novakovic also promoted Macedonism through funding false propaganda.
The first Balkan War forced the Ottomans out of the Macedonian region. Then these self-proclaimed Macedonian bands eventually broke away from Bulgaria, and through this identity theft and deception, propagated by generations of deliberate misinformation and history usurpation in Skopje's educational institutions, evolved into this false perception of a Macedonian identity which is FYROM. There was, at the time of the Balkan Wars, an authentic Macedonian Struggle in Greece as parts of southern Macedonia were eventually liberated from the Ottomans by the Greeks. Northern Macedonia is currently occupied by FYROM.
So, I challenge you Skopje. Some of the territory which you occupy is considered Macedonia but can you prove to the world that you are Macedonians? YOU CAN NOT BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT!

Posted by Anonymous | 19:55
Quite right, Floriniotis, as long as they acknowledge them to be Greek names. For instance, they like to use the Greek name "Macedonia" a lot, but they refuse to accept the fact the the word is Greek. They even went as far as to invent a new meaning for the word, with Slavic roots. Perhaps they will come up with a Slavic root for the word "anonymous" also. Hey, if you're gonna lie, might as well do a good job.
Posted by Anonymous | 23:16
Mr. Anonymous. You have nothing constructive to say? That's the best you can do? Are your mental abilities limited? Do you or don't you know where your grandfather came from? Was he Greek? Bulgarian? Serb? Moslem? Because that's all we had in the Macedonian region of the Balkans one hundred and so years ago, until some of these people all of a sudden started calling themselves ethnic Macedonians. Why? Because they lived in the Macedonian region. Kind of like someone who pitches a tent in your back yard and refuses to leave. After a while, he thinks the yard is his. You don't have shit you retards. You are occupying northern Macedonia and you are denying ethnic Greeks who live there their basic rights to self determination. There is no Macedonian nationality. There is no Macedonian ethnic consciousness. Macedonia is Greece.

my name is Peter and I'm from Australia have you got any other questions???? and whats your name boy
Posted by Anonymous | 15:49
That is a valid question. Greek schools teach that the Greek alphabet was inspired from the Phoenicians. Greek books on the history of the Greek language mention it and you can find it mentioned in Greek archaeological museums. That is no secret. Anything else you would like to know?
Posted by Anonymous | 16:14
And where did the Phoenicians come from.????
Posted by Anonymous | 17:02
Instead of changing the subject and dwelling on alphabet questions, let's concentrate on the article at hand. It claims that Gruevski has roots in Florina. His grand-dad is buried there. Nikolaos Grouios. He allegedly died in 1939. It would have been nice to show a picture of his grave. You know, for credibility purposes. Which means that Gruevski's family has been in FYROM for no more than 70 years. And the family's house in Greece is still owned by them so that disproves claims of genocide and seizing of properties by the Greeks. Are all you "Macedonians" like the Gruevskis? Kicked out of Greece in the 1940's? Or were you in FYROM from before? If so, how long before? Which comes to my challenge to ALL OF YOU self-proclaimed ethnic Macedonians. Can you prove your existence between 168 BC and 1878 AD? WHERE WERE YOU? FOR 2046 YEARS, WHERE WERE YOU?
Posted by Anonymous | 17:57
The name was Grouios - the suffix 'ski' was imposed after the late 1940s. The Grouios spoke the local Slavic idiom or Greek, or more likely a mixture of the two. But it was certainly not the language structured in Skopje in the 1950s.
Remember the film 'Shadows'? The ghost of the old lady speaks a dialect from Greek Macedonia which no one can understand in Skopje (or in Athens).
Posted by Anonymous | 18:23
And just to get something straight as far as the Greek alphabet goes. It is unrelated to the Phoenician alphabet. The Greek alphabet has its roots in Linear A and it's successor Linear B. Both Linear A and Linear B precede the Phoenician civilization and they have been found solely in ancient Greek sites.

Even the Skopjan Pseudohistorian Matkovski reads and translates from ottoman turkish: Grujos, not Gruev, not Gruevski.
About the edition: Skopjans have found in the archives the documents of the kadi [=turkish judge] of Monastiri. So, they publish them...But how? As all we know in old ottoman script, the vowels were ommited. So, when one wanted to write the greek name Dimitris, he would write only the consonants: dmtr. What the piggy skopjans had done? They translate: Dimitar!!!!! So, everyone thinks that this person is a bulgarian (""fake-macedonian "", according the Skopjan-gypsies)!!!!!!! So, what's next? Simply they put a title like that: "Turkski Izvori za Historijata Makedonskiot Narod" [=Turkish Sources for the History of the Macedonian Nation], AND THE BIG FRAUD, FOR THE ONES THAT THEY CANNOT FEEL IT - THEIR OWN PIGGY FLOCK AT THE MOST - HAS BEEN ACCOBLISHED! SO, MUCH RIDICULOUS THEY ARE!!!! The Turks are helping them in that fraud, by giving them unpublished documents from the Basbakanlik Arsivi in Ankara concerning districts of the geographical area of the Makedonia, sources that are not usually approachable to anyone else... The are giving them documents in order to rape the history on them...THAT'S WHY WE HAVE ANY RIGHT TO CALL THEM TURKOTSOGLANI! THE GREEK STATE HAS TO ASK AND TO INSIST ON THAT, FROM TURKEY TO RESPECT THE HISTORICAL TRUTH AND GIVE THE SAME DOCUMENTS TO US TOO, IN ORDER TO PUBLISH THEM SCIENTIFICALLY!
Back to our document again concerning this Athanasios Grujos, probably a great=great=great-great grand father of this big Gurunefski. The document is from the year 1622. Even the skopjan fake-historian d0o not dares to change in this point the name. The name is clearly greek one. About the Village of Rakovo: In this village the population where all the years fanatic greeks, not one never follower of the Bulgarian Exarchia, and from this village many hundreds of fighters in Macedonian Struggle, against the bulgarian tsetniks, have come.
SO, THE GURUNEFSKI IS NOTHING BUT A TRAITOR OF HIS OWN ANCHESTORS!!!!!!

SOME FYROMIANS R MACEDONIANS I admit it! SOME DO HAVE GREEK DNA
28000 Greek children were abducted by communists (including Skopjan communists) & transferred to Southern Yugoslavia that is todays Republic of Skopje. It is unknown under which label this population and their descendants are counted. Some of these children r ur parents! THIS IS THE ONLY WAY SOME OF U MIGHT BE MACEDONIANS
OR ARNT FYROMIANS AWARE OF THIS TRAGIC EVENT?
Read about it in
TIMES MAGAZINE:INNOCENT'S DAY Monday Jan 9 1950
TIMES MAGAZINE:INNOCENTS DAY Monday Jan 9 1950
Peace had come to battered, impoverished Greece; the Communist guerrillas had been driven out perhaps for good. But last week on Innocents' Day (the Church calendar's anniversary of Herod's Slaughter of the Innocents in Judea) Greece had a day of mourning—for 28000 children abducted by the bandits & now living on foreign, Communist soil.A two-gun salute from Mount Lycabettus woke Athenians at dawn. Church bells tolled & flags drooped at half-mast
Newspapers appeared with black-framed front pages. Places of amusement were closed all day, and for half an hour all traffic stopped, streets emptied, doors were closed and blinds drawn.
Queens Do Not Beg. Earnest young Queen Frederika, mother of three, broadcast a poignant message from the royal palace. She begged for the return of the 28,000 children living in exile "as a mother—because queens are not supposed to beg." Added Frederika: "The civilized world has remained silent too long."
The civilized world had made some well-meaning but ineffective protests UNSCOB(the UNs Special Committee on the Balkans) had verified the mass deportation of Greek children. The UN General Assembly had called on Yugoslavia Bulgaria Poland Czechoslovakia Hungary & Rumania 4 the return of the children
These governments had finally agreed 2 return any children called 4 by petition of their parents. Up to last week the Greek Red Cross had forwarded 8000 petitions but not 1 child had been sent back
Not Even Goodbye. In the palace with Frederika was a group of black-clad peasant women huddled at her side. Kaliroe Gouloumi, from Gorgopotamos, in Epirus, remembered how the Communists took her children: "They were in our village for a year. First they took our animals, then our food, then our children. I had three." Kaliroe wiped her eyes with her black shawl. "They did not even let me say goodbye. They said they were no longer my children but their children."
Said Kleoniki Kiprou from Kastoria: "First they hanged the priest then they cut off his mothers hands then they ordered us to follow m. What could we do?" In Albania her 8y-old girl & 5y old boy were taken from her & a rifle was thrust in2 her hands. Tapping the weapon the rebel said: This is ur husband this ur child, Kleoniki was forced in2 the battle of Vitsi. She got back 2 her village—without her children. In Furka Konitsa the villagers learned in advance of the guerrillas' abduction plans
They hid the children in ditches. The guerrillas, frustrated, took Sofia Makri & 20 other mums 2 the mountains & tortured them.
Said Sofia last week: They hung us from pine trees They burned our feet with coals They beat us When we fainted they revived us with cold water from the spring.
14 of us died up there but we dnt tell When the Greek army entered our village they found the dead living, for out of the earth came our children"
International Red Cross investigators have seen some of the children & reported that they r well fed
They r being schooled as young Communists & they r xpected to feel & show enthusiasm. Said a UN delegate in despair: "In 10 yrs there will be no abducted Greek children they will have been absorbed."
