Macedonia is ranked on the 66th place, among 177 other states according to the Human Development Index of the 2006 UNDP Report. Greece holds the highest rank (24) in compare to the other Balkan countries. Slovenia (27), Croatia (44), Bulgaria (54), Bosnia (62) and Albania (73).
The Human development index is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education and the standard of living. It is a standard means of measuring well being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed, developing, or under-developed country, and also measures the impact of economic policies on the quality of life.
MD:The top five countries in the report are Norway, Iceland, Australia, Ireland and Sweden. While Burkina Faso, Mali, Sierra Leone and Niger hold the bottom of the index.
