The British minister for Europe, Geoff Hoon said that Great Brittain wants to see Macedonia in the European Union, after meeting with Prime minister Nikola Gruevski.
"We are very pleased that the European Commission granted your country a candidate status during UK presidency of the EU. That decision was a sign of the real progress made in Macedonia, but candidate status obviously is the first step towards EU membership. The process will require a great deal of work on behalf of the government,"
The sooner the pace of reform is completed the sooner Macedonia could join the European Union," he said, adding that the UK is a strong supporter of the EU and NATO enlargement for Macedonia.
Macedonia and the United Kingdom signed an agreement Wednesday on avoidance of double taxation and protection of fiscal evasion on the revenue and capital taxes.
