MACEDONIA NAME DEBATE UNFOLDS IN UN

National.

Greece strongly objected the use of constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia at the session of the UN General Assembly, chaired by Macedonian representative Srgjan Kerim.

Kerim, who presided the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly, had introduced the head of state Branko Crvenkovski as a President of the Republic of Macedonia, which outraged a Greek representative to the UN, western news agencies said.

"I request, Mr. President, that the appropriate name - Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia - be used within the United Nations," Greek Ambassador John Murikis told the General Assembly.

Kerim stressed that he was well aware "of these facts" but he should also respect the dignity of each member of the UN.

"At the same time, as a president of the General Assembly, I need to show a full dignity towards each member of the UN, including my own country" Kerim said.

In his speech to the UN General Assembly, Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski said "The name of my country has always been Republic of Macedonia and it will remain a Republic of Macedonia.

In a strong-worded statement by Greek Foreign Ministry released late on Tuesday, Greece said Kerim acted "in accordance with instructions by his government", which harmed his credibility as a president of the General Assembly.

Denmark has edged up to share the top score of 9.4 with Finland and New Zealand.
