CONSTRUCTION ON OLD THEATRE TO START

Culture.

Construction of the Old Theatre started on Friday on the foundations that were laid earlier this year. More than one million euros are allotted from the 2008 budget of the Ministry of Culture for construction.
State Secretary of Culture Elizabeta Kancevska Milevska says construction works started immediately after authorization was obtained from the City of Skopje which includes expanded dimensions of the theatre and the traffic solution around the theatre.

The theatre is being built under the design of Jovan Stefanovski-Zan. Externally, it will preserve the authentic looks of the old baroque architecture of the old theatre building, and the interior will have room adapted to the Modern European standards – with around 900 seats and a movable three-level stage. Foreign experts will be consulted on stage technique and acoustics.
Construction of the new theatre building, i.e. “resurrection" of an old theatre that was located on the left bank of the Vardar River until the disastrous 1963 earthquake, will last by 2009 when the theatre is expected to be open for the public.
