VIKINGS IN MACEDONIA?
National.
Few-month long archaeological excavations on the Skopje Fortress (Skopje Kale) have shown exclusive results including those confirming that the Vikings used to live on the territory of Skopje.
Official documentation of the archaeological excavations of the Fortress states that in the late 11th century the Normans (Vikings), once known as producers of quality steel weapons, stayed in Skopje. Their presence in Skopje was recorded on two occasions, in 1081 to 1088 and in 1097 respectively.
Evidence of their presence here includes parts of a Viking weapon found unearthed during the archaeological excavations of the Fortress. The Normans produced their weapons in blacksmith shops also found on the Fortress.
The coordinator of the excavations Dragi Mitrevski says the Fortress still offers significant findings.
“Few-month long excavations have shown that remains from the 4th millennium B.C until today can be found under the Fortress,” he says.
