AHMETI ASKS THE POPE TO STAND AGAINST THE BUILDING OF A CHURCH
National.
Ali Ahmeti, the leader of the opposition DUI, sent a letter today to the Pope Benedict XVI, asking him to stand against Macedonian government's decision for building a church in downtown Skopje.
"I am asking you to show support and solidarity for our initiative aimed at preventing the religious tensions that will take place as a result of construction of an Orthodox religious object, which will stand as a sacrilege of the factual existence of the Catholic tradition in Macedonia," Ahmeti says in his letter to Benedict XVI.
Ahmeti further informs the Pope that the planned site for construction of the new church is located where the memorial plaque marking the spot where the house of the Skopje-born Mother Theresa once stood.
Ahmeti also reminds that Mother Theresa, who is widely seen as an embodiment of the Good Samaritan, was beatified by the late Pope John Paul II in 2003.
"As representatives of the Albanian people who are know by their religious tolerance, and given the multi-confessional character of the Macedonian state, we are disappointed and very concerned by this act of the government, which threatens to trigger a religious conflict," Ahmeti concludes.

Ali Ahmeti was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic by psychiatrists in Switzerland. I rest my case. However, building a church on this particular area would only worsen the urban landscape.
