The government of the Republic of Macedonia has completed preparation of a comprehensive project, “Macedonian Literature” and has announced that fantastic 130 volumes of literary work from all genres and all generations of Macedonian authors and writers belonging to all national communities in Macedonia will be published by the end of the year. Promotion of the first volumes is expected on the Day of the Slav Educators Cyril and Methodius, 24th May.
To carry out this capital project for the Macedonian literature and culture, the government has allotted additional funds of 24 million denars, which are not a part of the programme for the current publishing year.
“The goal of this project, first of the kind and scope, is to present the prolific and layered picture of the undisputable high literary values and thus give a new impetus in literature, open new pages in the development of our literature. Now then the fundamental project has got its physiognomy, I want to share my pleasure and happiness with all those who believe in such huge steps and give unselfish support in order that we succeed and show our maturity as a nation and culture, which knows how to respect its values and be proud of them,” Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said in a part of his address during presentation and a press conference.
The Macedonian cultural heritage will be represented in eight volumes with professional interpretations of the most significant occurrences, processes and figures from the 9th century to until the founders of the Macedonian modern literature. The rest 120 volumes will present work of the Macedonian modern authors until the present day. The capital project of 130 volumes will involve 30,000 pages and more than 100 authors. Additionally, around 200 authors will be presented in anthological selections in the areas of poetry, prose, drama, reviews and literature for children. This edition will be published in the languages the authors write in and the languages of nationalities: Albanian, Turkish, Roma and Vlach.
A project for publishing our literature in seven languages is planned for next year.
