World-famous soprano Jessye Norman opened Saturday evening the 48th edition of the most prestigious festival in Macedonia, Ohrid Summer in the Antique Theatre.
Famous persons from political and public life in Macedonia, members of the diplomatic corps, art lovers attend the opening ceremony.
The actor Gjorgji Jolevski, chairman of the steering board, addressing the audience on behalf of the organizers, cited the statement of the famous director Peter Brook who said, "art will save the world."
- Performance presented in this Antique Theatre where the plays of Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus were played where the spiritual memory of Macedonia was realised through the time, on European and world map with modern reality of Ohrid Summer and chronology of art performance of Ohrid Summer, we can say fascinated that Macedonia is world artistic scene which reminds as also to Rostropovic, Navarra, Carreras, Lipica, Avramovski, Siskov.., Jolevski said.
Prima-ballerina Aleksandra Mijalkova spoke on behalf of the artists, presenting the message that art has no fatherland it lives in the hearts of all those who sincerely love it.
President Branko Crvenkovski opening the festival said that Ohrid Summer is first-class cultural event in the Balkans and Europe – cultural forum and open scene for world culture and authors and reproductive elite.
- Ohrid was given this endless spiritual and cultural mission of top cultural and spiritual thought to offer the eternal peace of the lake and wonderful nature as an inspiration for great works. Regardless of the period when these works are created, they remain inseparable part of the eternal world cultural heritage, Crvenkovski said.
- Macedonian national renewal rose from the coast of this very beautiful Ohrid Lake, whereat through its greatest representatives laid the cornerstone of Macedonian authencity that includes identity and dignity of the Macedonian people, Crenkovski said.
Ensembles of the Macedonian Opera and Ballet under the baton of Sasa Nikolovski-Gjumar preceded Jessye Norman’s performance with compositions by Bernstein, Gershwin, Williams, Newton, Kerr, and other traditional songs.
Around 50 classical music concerts and theatrical performances and several art exhibitions fill the festival’s programme, with attendance by guests from around Macedonia, the region and the whole world.
Ohrid Summer Festival takes take place between July 12 and August 20.
